Peer Buddies is a Creative Arts class offered to 7th and 8th graders. Regular education students sign up to become a peer helper to a student/students in the Structured Teaching Program or Educational Life Skills classroom. After a series of training sessions, Peer Buddies are assigned to a particular student or group of students. The Peer Buddies join their assigned peer/peers in whatever class their peer is in. Some students may have a Peer Buddy in an academic class, where as others students may have a Peer Buddy in a Creative Arts class. Each student will have a Peer Buddy 2 periods a day, 4 days every week. The Peer Buddy does not take the place of the teacher or a teacher’s assistant; however, the students really enjoy being able to work with a peer. The students also get an opportunity to work on their social skills with a friend.
